Restorative dentistry
Teeth often suffer from decay, wear or accidental damage leaving them weakened and unattractive. At 'Smiles by Zahra' your dentist will check for decay or damage during your first visit. Following the examination you will be given a comprehensive diagnosis and recommendations to restore your teeth. You will also be informed of the options available to you. Once you decide, your dentist will provide a treatment plan together with estimated costs.
What type of restoration is used will also depend on how the material used will affect the function and appearance of the teeth. Many patients still have amalgam silver fillings that can spoil their appearance and the mercury in it is hazardous for your health. Your dentist can replace them with natural tooth coloured composite fillings when this is required.
Sometimes a referral to one of the clinics specialists may be necessary for example your physician for an overall health check - up and consent.
Orthodontics
The size or relationship of the jaws. Orthodontic treatment is well known for its use in correcting the growing pattern of jaws and children's teeth alignment but is equally effective for all age groups.
A poor bite or teeth that do not meet properly in the mouth can cause problems around the jaw. Solving this problem can offer great relief from uncomfortable eating and chewing and even talking. We at ‘Smiles by Zahra’ will assess the functioning of the mouth, jaws and teeth to ensure that the best treatment is prescribed.
Often braces are required, perhaps more often in children although they are increasingly used in treatment of adults. These may be fixed or removable-again depending on the problem.
Recent developments in braces have allowed for faster and more comfortable treatment, and clear braces are more popular with adults.
Endodontics
The tissues inside a tooth can occasionally become infected or inflamed. This can occur for a number of reasons, such as caries or trauma to the tooth or a crack in the enamel.
Treatment involves cleaning the inflamed or infected pulp from inside the tooth and re-shaping the cavity. The space is then filled to help avoid further infection. Local anaesthesia will ensure that the patient remains comfortable. The entire procedure will take no more than one or two visits.
Due to advances in endodontics, this type of treatment enjoys a very high level of success. This means that a tooth that may have needed removal a few years ago can now be saved. Lasers can disinfect the root canals and thus can reduce the treatment time and visit for the patient.
Cosmetic dentistry
We at ‘Smiles by Zahra’ can help you achieve that smile that you have always wanted. You may feel that your teeth are discolored, have chips or wide gaps, are too long or too short, missing teeth or perhaps they are an unflattering shape. Sometimes it may be that damage, wear or even trauma to the teeth leads you to want to get back to the smile you had before.
Whatever your reason for wanting to improve the appearance of your teeth, the Clinic will firstly discuss at length what you are looking to achieve to establish the best form of treatment for you. Then you will see a mock-up of how your teeth would look if you were to proceed with the chosen treatment.
This ensures that before embarking on a procedure, that you and the dental surgeon are in agreement about the desired result. Treatments for giving you a better smile range from tooth whitening to porcelain crowns or veneers, placing implants or replacing teeth with bridges.
Periodontics
Periodontal disease is often difficult to notice, as the symptoms are not obvious. Pain is frequently absent; caused by bacterial plaque; its effects are likely to be minor but can lead to tooth loss, so it is important to catch it early.
A mild form of periodontal disease is commonly known as gingivitis. This can lead to inflammation and bleeding during brushing, as well as bad breath and swelling of the gums. However, the early stages are easily treated with a visit to the hygienist as well as an efficient oral health regime, which we at ‘Smiles by Zahra’ will advice you about. Some people are more susceptible to the bacteria that cause gum disease and this can lead to periodontitis.
This can cause detachment of the gums and ligaments anchoring the tooth. If this is the case, the periodontist will use a non-surgical approach to cleaning below the gum line.
Occasionally further treatment may be needed to recontour the gums or repair the bone wherever possible to get healthy again. Following treatment, advice to follow a through hygiene regime will be given to ensure the best chance of avoiding future problems.
Maxillo-facial and oral surgery
When teeth are buried or impacted especially the wisdom teeth oral or maxillofacial surgery is required. To assess if surgical intervention is required the maxillofacial surgeon will evaluate what treatment is needed. Apart from impacted teeth, the maxillofacial surgeon will undertake treatment on cysts, bone fractures and the invasive procedures for surgical orthodontics, and placement of dental implants.
Implantology
Dental implants are highly effective way of replacing missing teeth because they provide the most stable foundation possible for crowns, bridges or dentures. Implants are usually made of titanium, an extremely strong metal around which the bone grows again. This bony attachment helps to preserve the surrounding bone, thereby avoiding further bone loss.
As the closest replacement for natural teeth available, implants provide excellent function as well as appearance; however they require high levels of oral hygiene to maintain them. The implant placement is a procedure usually carried out under local anaesthetic. The implant is placed into the bone and a temporary cap is fitted as the implant is allowed to heal. As time passes this implant becomes further integrated with the bone.
A crown is made from porcelain, usually with the metal substructure, to fit the implant exactly so that it complements the rest of the teeth in size, shape and colour. If more than one tooth needs replacement a number of implants can be inserted which can be restored individually or with a bridge. Following completion of the treatment 'Smiles by Zahra' will give you full guidance to ensure that you know to care for the implants thoroughly.
Surgical Orthodontics
Rreatment may be required to straighten your teeth or even correct the size or relationship of the jaws. Orthodontic treatment is well known for its use in correcting the growing pattern of jaws and children's teeth alignment but is equally effective for all age groups.

TMJ - Temporo Mandibular Joint Pain
When the mouth is closed, the way the teeth sit together is called occlusion. Ideally, the occlusion is in harmony with the jaws, temporo-madibular joints (TMJs) and the chewing muscles. However very few people are lucky enough to have this ideal harmony and many people suffer from discomfort due to their occlusion.
Some of the symptoms are head, neck and shoulder pains, clicking sounds or pain around the ear, or simply wear and tear of the teeth themselves caused by clenching and grinding.
The treatment of these problems is to replace any missing teeth and create a harmonious occlusion. In the first instance this is achieved with a special hard-plastic mouth guard and later transferred directly to the teeth by a correction procedure called 'equilibration', which may entail replacement of unsatisfactory restorations.
Whitening
Discoloured teeth can make many people feel self-conscious about their whole appearance. There are a number of reasons why teeth can become discoloured. These range from the food we eat to anti-biotic treatments, trauma or natural ageing.
Now, relatively simple procedures are available at 'Smiles by Zahra' to whiten teeth easily and safely.
Maintenance following treatment is vital to keep the teeth looking their best. The way to care for the newly whitened teeth is all part of the process that the clinic offers. And the results can be remarkable. Many patients will find their confidence increases and they develop a bigger and healthier smile to show off their teeth.

Pediatric Dentistry
Peadiatric dentistry is a speciality concerned with all aspects of dental care for children and adolescents. From approximately 6 months after birth, with the eruption of the first teeth into teenage years, younger patient's teeth require special attention.
Occasionally, the possibility of trauma or orthodontic considerations, general decay or loss of the tooth surface will mean that specific treatment and management are required.
It is very important to see children from an early age to ensure a preventive approach to their dental care and promote a positive attitude to their teeth for life. Fluoride treatment, pit and fissure sealant are few of the preventive measures rendered to young teeth.
Regular reviews and monitoring are the most important aspects of dental care, after a good daily cleaning regime. This will help to avoid the need for major treatment or at least keep it to a minimum.
